The name "Brunswick" was in honour of King George III
of England whose family came from Brunswick-Lunengurg (Germany).
New Brunswick became a province in 1867.

THE FLAG
- The flag and the shield look almost the same.
- The royal lion of England is on the top of the flag and shield.
- The bottom has a sailing ship with oars. The province
once relied on the shipping and shipbuilding industry.
- It became the official flag of New Brunswick in 1965.

COAT OF ARMS
- Above the shield is an Atlantic Salmon with a crown.
- White-tailed Deer are standing on either side of the shield.
- The two deer are wearing collars of wampum.
- The small shields on the deer represent the early settlers -
the English, Irish, Scottish and French.
- The deer are standing on a mound of violets and fiddleheads (ferns).
- The motto Spem Reduxit means "Hope restored".

FLORAL EMBLEM
- The purple violet is found in the meadows and woods of eastern Canada.
- The small bluish-purple flowers blossom in the spring and early summer.
- The flower was adopted as the floral emblem in 1936.

- tree - Balsam Fir (used for Christmas trees, lumbering and
pulp and paper industry)
